AMS Assistant Professor Dr. Cecilia Diniz Behn was selected as the winner of the 2017-2018 Mines Teaching Award—Tenure -Track Faculty. WHOOP!
Cecilia is a successful researcher and professor along with being a great role model for young women at Mines. Cecilia has introduced two courses focused on mathematical biology into our curriculum: MATH 331 Mathematical Biology and MATH 472/572 Mathematical and Computational Neuroscience. She is also an important player in the interdisciplinary MS and PHD degree programs in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering.
Cecilia has strong research ties. While continuing her own research in the Math Biology field, she also assists graduates and undergraduates with research. Her mentorship has led to 3 successful master’s students and an incredibly active research group. Cecilia is a regular participant in SWiM (Society for Women in Mathematics) and an active member of AWM (Association for Women in Mathematics)
We congratulate Cecilia on her accomplishments!
AMS Teaching Professor Gus Greivel was selected as the winner of the 2017-2018 Mines Teaching Award—Teaching Faculty. YAY!
Gus is not only an AMS alum (Outstanding Graduating Senior in ’92!) but he has also been a member of the Mines faculty since 1996, teaching over 20 different courses in his years here. This award recognizes the quality, quantity and diversity of Gus’ instructional contributions to Mines, his continued pursuit to improve the undergraduate experience, and his leadership among the Mines teaching faculty.
In addition, as a member of the ad-hoc Committee on Teaching Faculty he worked to craft the initial handbook and procedures that formalized the role of teaching faculty at Mines. Gus took a leadership role among the teaching faculty group, serving as its first ever representative on the Faculty Senate, serving on the University Teaching Faculty Promotion Committee, and mentoring numerous junior colleagues in the development of their dossiers for promotion within the teaching faculty ranks.
We congratulate Gus on this fantastic achievement!
