We are proud to share that Professor Deb Carney is part of a research team recently awarded a Gates Foundation grant.

Project Title: Impact of Coordination and Common Course Model on Student Outcomes
Principal Investigator: Chris Rasmussen (SDSU)
Co-Principal Investigators: Deb Carney (Mines), Naneh Apkarian (SDSU)

The project involves a mixed methods research design over two years, focusing on 12-15 math departments that coordinate foundational courses such as Precalculus, Calculus 1, and Calculus 2. In the first year of the grant, data will be collected through surveys and departmental liaisons, while the second year will involve in-depth case studies of six selected departments. The research aims to identify the relationship between dimensions of course coordination and student course-level outcomes. Our findings will then be distilled in a toolkit that includes a set of design principles for others.
