Dr. Ebru Bozdağ was presented with the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) Vladimir Keilis-Borok Medal at the 24th Annual Conference of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG) in Montréal, Canada, where she also delivered her medal lecture.
At the same conference, Kelly Ryan, a PhD student in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS), received the Best Student Poster Presentation Award for her poster, “Exploring Mantle Anisotropy with Shear-Wave Splitting Intensity Measurements Based on 3D Numerical Wave Simulations.” Ryan’s research uses 3D global wave simulations to investigate commonly neglected finite-frequency effects in shear-wave splitting measurements and their impact on inferences of mantle anisotropy. Her work aims to develop new measurement and imaging strategies that address potential limitations of traditional ray-theoretical approaches.
Ayon Ghosh, a PhD student in Geophysics with a minor in AMS in Bozdağ’s group, also received an IAMG travel grant to present part of his PhD research in an oral presentation titled “Rayleigh Wave Horizontal-to-Vertical Amplitude Ratio Measurements for Full-Waveform Inversion.” His work, conducted in collaboration with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program in Golden, explores the use of Rayleigh-wave ellipticity measurements in full-waveform inversion toward developing an improved crustal model of the United States.
